Tik Tik Tik movie review: Jayam Ravi’s film is an absurd race against reason
Tik-tik-tik is the sound that symbolizes time passing quickly, deadlines passing us by and closing in on us as the clock ticks on towards a deadline that threatens human survival.
Jayam Ravi’s Tik Tik Tik takes this concept one step further by tracking an impending 60 sqkm asteroid that threatens Earth, setting in motion an epic race against time as humanity faces up against an imminent impact while extraordinary individuals or maybe just one individual act quickly to prevent its collision with our world.
Tik Tik Tik movie review
Tik Tik Tik has no such luck. In fact, its protagonist Jayam Ravi stands as its focal point and leads us through an impossible sequence of events which strain credibility even with suspended disbelief.
Vasu is an accomplished magician whose meager income from his talent helps support his son with dignity. Devoted to helping those exploited by rich and powerful individuals, he often uses his skills for social good work; unfortunately he eventually falls foul of police authorities and faces false charges of abuse of power.
India recently realized an asteroid is on its way and, potentially, about to strike our planet with fatal force, yet none of its friends possess powerful enough nuclear missiles for such a mission due to nuclear disarmament laws.
India is furiously beeping out one country (China) which defies the rules by having one missile hidden away safely in space. Instead of asking this country nicely for permission to do this, Indian defence establishment decide to steal this missile without asking politely first and use a jailed magician and two friends from jailed magician to take on an asteroid and blast it – given two-day training, hand-held device, good wishes from us all and blast away Our magician will defy physics laws and common sense by defying both laws while also going beyond.
Tik Tik Tik boasts several firsts – Jayam Ravi is the first Indian ever to step onto the moon after running out of liquid nitrogen in his spaceship, as well as being the first person ever to go an entire journey without oxygen in his cylinder.
At this point in the film, it becomes apparent that Tik tik tik is no race against time but rather one against space and continuum theory, not to mention common sense.
The filmmaker claims that all visual effects were done in Chennai, which is impressive. While there may have been shots that looked amateur onscreen, other scenes made up for any potential shortcomings.
D Imman’s score has done wonders for this film, which oscillates between humorous and horrifying. Jayam Ravi’s son Aarav Ravi made his acting debut with Tik Tik Tik and their father-son relationship is beautifully captured through Kurumba song. The tik tik tik movie actress name, Nivetha Pethuraj, also adds depth to the narrative with her performance.
Jayam Ravi’s Tik Tik Tik was an ambitious concept that did not translate well onto film. While its visuals and performances were outstanding, its plot lacked any significant character development; one bright spot in this regard was Nivetha Pethuraj as Captain Swathi; however, some additional backgrounder would not have gone amiss here.
