Sunny Deol was last seen on screen in 2016 in Ghayal Once Again, the sequel to his 1990 blockbuster Ghayal. Unfortunately, Sunny directed and failed miserably at helming this sequel.
Sunny Deol, actor-filmmaker, believes the entire economics and dynamics of filmmaking has failed, leading to corporatisation in films today. When discussing his marketing skills, he admitted his shortcomings: “You know very well my limited abilities in selling myself. If only I knew how, but cinema is my passion that I inherited from my father (Dharmendra). Even when not seen on screen often enough, cinema is always at the back of my mind.”
He last appeared in 2016’s Ghayal Once Again, directed by Sunny to be a sequel to 1990’s Ghayal and which ultimately failed.
Sunny commented, “I did what I could given the limitations. The entire dynamics and economics of filmmaking have failed; today there is too much corporatisation but not enough genuine passion in films today. Even as a younger person I didn’t watch many movies regularly; when I have time now I prefer south Indian movies as their content can often be quite powerful.”
He recently watched Baahubali, and left with tears in his eyes and hope in his heart. Though not up to its mark with respect to special effects, but an extraordinary score in terms of emotion and drama made it memorable and this is what cinema should focus on,” he noted.
Sunny can next be seen next week in Poster Boys, an offbeat comedy directed by Shreyas Talpade and featuring Bobby Deol. “What attracted me to this project was its quirky nature – with me instantly warming to its idea when hearing about its popularity in Marathi. Not many scripts nowadays make me smile like Poster Boys does.” He added, “I don’t care about the box office verdict, whether it is poster boys hit or flop. I just enjoyed working with my brother and Shreyas.”
Though Sunny is widely associated with action movies, she also enjoys performing comedy. “When time permits I enjoy performing comedy – even though my father’s sense of comic timing surpasses mine.”
Sunny is also an unassuming father. Karan, Sunny’s son, will soon make his film debut with Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, named for an immortal melody from Dharmendra’s film Blackmail. But Sunny remains shy about discussing Karan’s debut: he only wants it done once “Let it first be made; right now it is too soon.” However, like any father wants the best for their child so decided to direct it himself; we will release the film whenever we feel it is ready.
Why have we seen so little of Sunny on screen?
At this stage of her career, Sunny cannot explain why she is not seen more frequently on screen.
He laments India’s limited movie theatres. Although we have evolved from single theatres to multiplexes, we still lack enough cinemas for all films; smaller films may go unnoticed regardless of how deserving they may be of attention. He hopes ‘Poster Boys’ will receive good theatres and timing.
“Even though I may not be dominating the box office, audiences still love all of us Deols immensely – there’s no greater compliment we could receive.”
