Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter: Meaning
It is a thin, soft, long catheter that is a tube. It is inserted into a vein in the child’s arm, leg, or neck. The tip of the catheter is positioned in a large vein. It carries the blood into the heart. The PICC line is used for long-term intravenous that is IV antibiotics, nutrition, or medications, and also for blood draws.

Can my child shower with a PICC line?
We will place a thin transparent fabric of silk and a clear bandage. It must remain dry at all times but the PICC line is in place. Approximately two days after we place the PICC line.
A nurse at the hospital or a home-care nurse will change the bandage. After this, it is ok to shower. As long as the PICC line is covered with a waterproof bandage. We will teach one how to make a waterproof bandage.
One may also sponge bathe the child. As long as one should keep the PICC line site dry at all times.
Are there any activity restrictions?
The child will be able to resume most activities. Like the daycare or school. The child should be discouraged from activities like football and rough playing. It may result in a pull to the PICC line. It leads to damage or loss of the catheter. If one should have questions about which activities are ok, then please ask the doctor.
