NRC Full Form: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a database that contains the names of all authentic citizens of India. Only Assam has such a register at the moment.
The experiment could also be applied to other states. Nagaland is already working on a comparable database called the Indigenous Inhabitants Register.
The Centre intends to establish a National Population Register (NPR) that will include demographic and biometric information on citizens.

In Assam, the NRC is essentially a list of Indian residents who live in the state. The purpose of the citizens’ registry is to identify foreign nationals living in the state that borders Bangladesh.
Following a Supreme Court ruling in 2013, the process of updating the register began, with the state’s almost 33 million residents having to verify that they were Indian nationals prior to March 24, 1971.
On August 31, the updated final NRC was issued, with over 1.9 million applications failing to make the cut.
What is the best way to establish citizenship?
One of the primary conditions in Assam was that the names of the applicant’s family members must appear in either the 1951 NRC or the electoral records up until March 24, 1971.
Applicants could also submit documents like a refugee registration certificate, birth certificate, LIC policy, land and tenancy records, citizenship certificate, passport, government-issued license or certificate, bank/post office accounts, permanent residential certificate, government employment certificate, educational certificate, and court records.
What happens to those who are left out?
Non-inclusion of a person’s name in the NRC does not automatically make him or her a foreigner,” the government has stated. Individuals who fall under this category will be able to bring their cases to foreigners’ tribunals.
If a person loses a dispute at the tribunal, they can appeal to the high court, which will then appeal to the Supreme Court.
In the case of Assam, the state administration has stated that it will not hold anyone until the foreigners’ tribunal declares them a foreigner.
What can people do if they are unable to locate historical data?
The government has established NRC Seva Kendras in each of Assam’s districts to assist people in finding Legacy Data, receiving Legacy Data Codes, and receiving NRC Application forms.
In Assam, the National Research Council (NRC) was established in 1951.
In 1951, the NRC for Indian citizens in Assam was established for the first time. The states of Manipur and Tripura were also given permission to establish their own NRCs, but this never happened. The move was made to track down Indian citizens in Assam amid “unprecedented” migration from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
Those who lived in India on January 26, 1950, or were born in India, or had parents who were born in India, or had lived in India for at least five years prior to the cut-off date of January 26, 1950, were included on the list.
