The world lost a true icon earlier this month. After a long battle with cancer, Joe Simmons, a man who helped to establish the Soap Gang in North Carolina, and the North Carolina Central University Eagles, died at the age 68.

Simmons’s passing shocked many, including Simmons’s friends and family.

Many tributes have been posted by the community to Joe Simmons’ passing. Redding Police Department took the initiative and posted Joe’s passing on their FaceBook page.

Many people have paid tribute, including Madea Simmons, his daughter and witness protection child.

Joe’s most remarkable feat was his average of 5.46 yards per run during his time at North Carolina Central University. He holds five of the seven school’s rushing records.

Simmons was selected to the Second-Team All-America in his senior season. Simmons’ career total of 2,840 yards rushing was his highest. He also caught 43 passes totaling 469 yards.

Joe Simmons is also the author Cantor Basics. This book has been used in healing ministries for many years. He speaks at churches and pastor music conferences. A few of his solo CDs were also recorded, which are used extensively in healing ministries.

Joe’s death was devastating for the community but it is not the end. Six of his children, including Brandon, are still with him at the bakery.

Joe Simmons was also a teacher. He was a teacher at White’s Chapel Elementary and Arlington Elementary Schools. Beloit College was also his teaching site. He was also a member of the American Institute of Parliamentarians as well as the NAACP Memphis Chapter.

Joe traveled extensively after his retirement. He was the longest serving assistant pastor at New Little Rock Baptist Church, Memphis.

He was also a Destiny International Ministries deacon. He was also a poll-watcher for Shelby County Work Release Review Board.
