Minnesota Vikings announce the release of veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen on Friday afternoon, the team reported.

Thielen has been with the Vikings for nine seasons, beginning as an undrafted rookie and remaining an incredibly productive and consistent player throughout most of his career.

“Adam will forever be a part of the Minnesota Vikings family and history. His leadership on the field, selfless teammateship and lasting impact in the community were unparalleled.

We are thankful for everything he’s brought to the organization since 2013, as well as having had the chance to work with him over the last year,” Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said. “He embodies everything the Minnesota Vikings should stand for – may Adam, Caitlin and their entire family experience nothing but success for them.”

After serving as a backup for his first two seasons, Thielen was promoted into the Vikings’ starting lineup prior to the 2015 campaign.

He’s since been named to the Pro Bowl twice and helped lead their team to NFC title game in 2017 with 1,373 yards receiving. Although his production has dropped off over recent seasons, his knack for finding the endzone remains undiminished; he caught 10 touchdowns in 2021 and six this past season.

“Adam’s story is one many know and admire, an inspirational example of what hard work and determination can accomplish. For over a decade, Adam honed his craft to become one of the NFL’s most well-recognized wide receivers. Additionally, he dedicated so much time into his home state of Arkansas that made it even more special for him to earn our 2022 Walter Payton Man of the Year nomination,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said.

“I personally relied on Adam’s work ethic, leadership qualities, and counsel multiple times last season to help our team get where we wanted it to be. I appreciate Adam’s contributions and will continue rooting for continued success for him, Caitlin, their children – both adults – along with continued success for them all!”

On Monday, Minnesota sought to get their salary cap situation under control by releasing veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks and freeing up millions in cap space.
