China Lifts Ban on Marvel Movies, Sets Release Dates for ‘Black Panther 2,’ ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which has been released all over the globe since November last year, will be available in China starting February 7. The sequel “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania”, which was released in all other countries last November, will also be released in China on February 7. These dates were made public via Marvel’s Chinese social media accounts.
These movies will mark the first Marvel adventure to be released in China since “Avengers: Endgame”, which grossed a staggering $632m in the territory, and “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, which brought in $198m in the territory.
Marvel movies have always been very popular in China. “Black Panther” earned $105 million and “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” $121 million respectively.
Disney has been ignoring Marvel. In the pandemic era, very few Hollywood movies were allowed to screen in Chinese cinemas.
The shift towards Disney movies in the Middle Kingdom started in 2022, with James Cameron’s epic “Avatar: The Way of Water,”.
China’s Film Bureau granted permission for the film to be shown in the country. The science-fiction tentpole has so far earned $220 million in the region.
It is not clear why some recent titles from Disney and other major studios were denied release in China.
It is likely that this is sabre-rattling directed at the U.S. during times of increased tensions, particularly with jingoistic events such as the 100th anniversary celebration of the Chinese Communist Party or the 20th National Congress taking place in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
