Govinda, famous for his incredible dancing abilities and incredible performances in Bollywood cinema, recently discussed his journey into dance and stardom during an in-depth interview. This legendary actor shared that dancing wasn’t something planned out but rather came about organically through necessity and wanting to stand out amongst competing Hindi film actors.
Govinda made his film debut with “Ilzaam” in 1986 and has gone on to appear in over 165 Hindi films since. His roles in hit movies such as “Coolie No. 1,” which sparked the debate of “coolie no 1 hit or flop,” “Hero No. 1,” and “Raja Babu” have won him great acclaim among fans; yet his unexpected discovery that dancing wasn’t part of his original plans adds another unique angle to his journey.
Govinda recalls his early career when established actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty earned critical acclaim for their acting abilities. Overwhelmed, Govinda discovered other talents besides acting – dancing being one. To stand out from competition and guarantee his livelihood he decided to further explore these other abilities by learning dance from friends; although dance wasn’t something he knew how to do at first; “Dance wasn’t something I knew how to do at first”.
As his household needed financial support and acting was becoming an increasingly competitive industry with talented actors, he considered dance as a skill that would set him apart and eventually become his signature moves and style – ultimately becoming his signature move trademark.
Begun as an act of necessity, Govinda quickly established himself as an exceptional dancer. Songs from his movies such as “Aap Ke Aa Jane Se”, “I Am a Street Dancer”, and “Bam Bam Bambai”, became chartbusters establishing him as an iconic dancing figure. His amazing dancing abilities quickly propelled him towards stardom while quickly earning him widespread appreciation from audiences worldwide.
Govinda soon found himself dancing alongside some of Bollywood’s biggest names such as Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna – each role offering him an unforgettable dance journey that left its mark in Indian cinema history.
