The daughter, Nefisa, starting as a Dressmaker. She is turning a hobby into a full-time occupation. She sees it – humiliating herself. Nefisa’s faith in men will take a beating after her lover.
Local grocer’s son cheating her into sex and marries another woman. She is the worship, but a plain daughter can never get over this incident.
Nor can she setting standards using God’s rules and values her sexual try earnestly.
He turns Nefisa into a woman, and she sleeps with strangers. The money that she earns from this is an adding use of income.
Hussein is the elder of the two Teenagers, who are sacrifices for his higher studies. The hopes of a bright future to allow the youngest. He completes his education and joins the War College.

The story has hope since it starts, with the knowledge that children are growing up. So, there must be a way out of their poverty as soon as they got a Job.
Mahfouz manages to a particular style the extremely drunk conditions.
They were destroying this hope at every milestone in each of the leading character’s lives. Description of the house and building, where they stay gives inducing an extreme feeling.
The reader hopes to escape with each character, again move only into a new and equally having a powerful feeling setting.
