Davey Allison was born in 1961 in Hueytown, Alabama into a racing family. His father Bobby Allison was an acclaimed NASCAR driver with 84 wins throughout his career – including three Daytona 500 victories. At an early age, Davey began racing locally before making it big in NASCAR competitions.
Allison made his NASCAR debut in 1985 and entered his first full season of 1987. That year he won his first Cup race and earned himself the title of Rookie of the Year; going on to have an illustrious career that included 19 Cup wins and four consecutive finishes among the top 10 in points.
In 1992, Allison experienced his most memorable moment during the Daytona 500. He and his father Davey were leading the race into turn four on the final lap when Davey held off Morgan Shepherd’s charge to claim victory – marking the first time father and son had finished first and second respectively in this event.
On July 12, 1993, Allison was testing his helicopter at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama when it crashed. He suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately passed away the following day from his injuries.
