Ans Westra was born on 28 April 1936 in Leiden, the daughter of Hein Westra and Hendrika Christina van Doorn.

After moving to Rotterdam in 1953, she started studying at Industries school voor Meisjes and eventually graduated with a diploma in arts and craft teaching specializing in artistic needlework in 1957.
