Matthew Potts, 24, was crucial to England’s victory over New Zealand in the recently finished three-Test series and was also essential to the home team’s defeat of India on the first day of the rescheduled fifth Test on Friday at Edgbaston.

Who Is Matthew Potts: The New Bowling Star for England Cricket

The latest bowling sensation for England cricket. An accomplished cricketer from England, Matthew James Potts was born on October 29, 1998.

Right-handed fast bowler Potts bats last in the lineup and bowls. He plays first-class cricket for Durham and made his international debut for England in a test match in June 2022.

During England’s Test squad for their home series against New Zealand in May 2022, Potts gained his first ever call-up to an international team.

Potts took the field for England against New Zealand on June 2, 2022, in his first-ever Test match. England was able to win the test by a margin of 7 wickets to 68 runs as a result of Potts’ effort.

His second innings statistics were 3 wickets for 55 runs, compared to his first innings stats of 4 wickets for just 13 runs.

In a first-class game for Durham that was a part of the 2017 County Championship on June 8, 2017, Potts made his debut. He made his debut for Durham on May 18th, 2018, in the List A match of the Royal London One-Day Cup. On July 19, 2019, he played in his maiden T20 match for Durham against Northamptonshire.

His services were acquired by the Northern Superchargers in April 2022 for The Hundred’s 2022 season.

With a 6 for 58 in the second half of the same month, Potts recorded his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket while representing Leicestershire in the 2022 County Championship.

A month later, Potts took eleven wickets in the match against Glamorgan, including seven in the second innings, and helped Durham defeat Glamorgan. As a result, Durham won by a margin of 58 runs.

If you want to establish yourself in the realm of test cricket, it’s difficult to dismiss one of the best players in the world in your very first over at Lord’s.

In the opening game of the series, Potts was successful in executing this move, which led to Kane Williamson being caught behind in the play.

It’s amazing how things have largely held steady from where they left off. Potts, 23, has 14 wickets overall for an average of 23.28. In his four innings, he has three times dismissed New Zealand’s skipper, Kane Williamson.

Having said all of that, it is not uncommon for young fast bowlers to make their debut on the field by picking up a number of wickets against batters who are not very familiar with them.

The component that has provided the most convincing indication that Potts will have a long-term career at the top level is the way in which he has thrived despite having greater responsibility placed upon him while playing for Leeds this week.
