Meaning of Mahashivaratri

Maha Shivaratri is the Hindu festival that is celebrated annually in honor of the god Shiva. It also refers to the night when Lord Shiva performs the cosmic dance.

It is a big festival in Hinduism, and this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of overcoming the darkness and ignorance in life and the whole world.

The Fruits, leaves, sweets, and milk to Lord Shiva are made. Some people perform all-day fasting with chanting Vedic or tantric worship of Lord Shiva, and some people perform meditative Yoga. 

In Lord Shiva temples, Om Namah Shivaya, the sacred mantra of Shiva, chanted through the day. Lord Shiva devotees praise Lord Shiva through the recitations of the Mantra or Shiv Chalisa.

Maha Shivaratri is celebrating over three or ten days which is based on the Hindu lunisolar calendar. In Every lunar month, there is a Shivaratri in 12 per year. 

The primary occasion is Maha Shivaratri, or great Shivaratri, which is to be held 13th night and 14th day of the month, Phalguna. Calendar, this day falls in either the month of February or March.

History of Mahashivaratri:

Maha Shivratri festival is associated with several stories about Lord Shiva, who is also known as The Destroyer within the Hindu mythology. Generally, it is celebrated as the anniversary of Lord Shiva and also Goddess Parvati. 

Still, there are many other stories in various texts and scriptures describing why Maha Shivratri is observed.

According to Puranas in history, the festival Shivaratri is celebrated as the day Shiva saved the world from the pot of poison that was emerged during the great mythical churning of the ocean called ‘Samudra Manthan.’

Another story says that the festival Shivaratri makes the day Lord Brahma and Vishnu got involved in an argument about their personal. It believes an angry Lord Shiva punishes them on taking the form of a massive fire spread across the length of the universe. 

Lord Vishnu and Brahma then got into the race to find the end of the fire and prove their talk. However, Brahma believed to have resorted to a lie and angered Lord Shiva extensively cursed that no one will ever pray to him. 

Brahma has played a significant role in hiding the lie. In the Shivaism tradition of this festival, this is the night when Lord Shiva performed the joyous dance of creation.

Significance of Mahashivaratri:

On this day of Shivaratri, followers of Lord Shiva observe the special day of Maha Shivratri as Fast. Many of the Devotees going Lord Shiva temples across the country and perform late evening puja, offering milk to the Shivaling and praying for moksha(Salvation).

Some of the people are spending the night chanting verses and hymns in praise of Lord Shiva. The Women also pray to be blessed with a good future husband and a happy married life. 

Some of the temples even organizing fairs and other cultural programs on the day of Shivaratri. Shivaratri has great importance for the occasion of Kumbh Mela also.

It is believed that the people who fast on this day and offer prayers to Lord Shiva are blessed with a piece of good luck. The most famous festival of Maha Shivratri celebrations is taking place in Ujjain, which is believed to be the most sacred and holy abodes of Lord Shiva. 

Large processions or groups are carried out throughout the city, with the people thronging the streets to catch a glimpse of the sacred idol of Lord Shiva.
