COVID vaccines are now available at pharmacies of supermarket chain Jewel Osco, with those eligible able to register and book appointments.

The retailer has said that it expects all of its pharmacies to have the COVID vaccine but supplies of the doses will remain limited during the initial roll out. Eligibility is based on the guidelines released by each individual state’s public health department.
Jewel Osco—which is a subsidiary of grocery company Albertsons—has 183 stores in Illinois, four in Indiana and one in Iowa, its website says.
It is working under the Federal Retail Pharmacy Partnership Program, announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on February 2, 2021 with the aim of distributing vaccines via stores including Walmart, Walgreens, Publix and CVS.
Illinois is currently vaccinating health care workers, residents of long-term care facilities, residents aged 75 years and over and non–health care frontline essential workers.
Indiana is vaccinating adults aged 65 and over, residents and staff of long-term care facilities alongside health care workers and first responders.
Iowa is vaccinating persons aged 65 years and over, first responders, some child care workers and teachers, frontline essential workers and some care home residents under a tiered rollout system that can be found in detail on its state public health website.
How to register and book an appointment
wel Osco has urged those seeking a vaccine to avoid calling its stores directly about distribution information, but instead to contact state or local health departments.
It has advised people to remain patient as store supply is based on vaccines available from state and local health departments, and doses won’t initially be widespread.
“More will open as additional vaccines become available to us. We kindly ask that you avoid calling your local store, as our teams are focused on serving patients.
This pulls them away from this important service,” Jewel Osco explains on its website.
If eligible, people can register and book appointments online.
On the store website, residents can search availability then—if supply is there—book an appointment.
In addition, you can sign up to receive updates about distribution timing and scheduling. This is not a waiting list for the COVID vaccine, the site said.
The vaccines are available at no cost to patients. Those who book an appointment will have to provide information to the pharmacy staff, including some proof of insurance. Those without insurance can bring state identification or a driver’s license.
The Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccines require two doses to be effective. Moderna doses are taken 28 days apart and the Pfizer doses are 21 days apart. Jewel Osco store and pharmacy visitors are required to wear masks or face coverings.
