The Story of the Festival Dussehra

The Festival Dussehra is one of the most popular Hindu festivals, Dussehra, commemorates the victory of the Lord Rama over the mighty demon king of the Lanka called Ravana. The legend associated with this festival is that the Lord Rama, the eighth incarnation of the Lord Vishnu who headed towards the Lanka, to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the Ravana.

Together with his brother Laxman and a troupe of the monkeys which is led by his devotee Hanuman, he got into a war with the Ravana which lasted for the nine days and victoriously they defeated the ten-headed demon king on the tenth day. This day came to be known as the Vijaydashmi or Dussehra which is meaning the victory attained on the tenth day. 

Traditional Celebrations

The festival of the Dussehra is celebrated to acknowledge the victory of the good over the evil. The celebrations of the Dussehra begin from the very first day of the Navratri and it is continue till the tenth day. A special programme called “Ramlila”, which is the dramatic enactment of the great epic called “Ramayana” which is organised in the various parts of the countries.

This continues for the nine days of the Navratri and finally on the tenth day, the actors dressed up as the characters of Rama and Laxman and also act out the final moments of the battle and shoot the flaming arrows at the giant effigies of the ten-headed Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna and the son Meghnad which are placed in the vast open grounds, where the huge crowds gather to witness this act of the burning the evil. This is followed by the extravagant fireworks and Mela.

The Festival Dussehra being an important Hindu festival, is celebrated with the great enthusiasm in all parts of the country. You too can celebrate this festival at the home with your family. Here are some tips to celebrate the festival Dussehra at home:

>> Dress up your children as the various characters from the Ramayana and start prepare them to perform the famous scenes from the Ramayana epic.

>> Recite the stories of the legendary king and god Rama to your children.

>> Tell them that the festival Dussehra is celebrated to honour the day as the victory of the good over the evil.

>> Take your children to the local fairs or in the melas and have them watch the Drama called “Ramlila”.

>> Buy them the swords, dhanusha, gadda and also the masks of the various characters of the Ramayana.

>> Motivate your children to use their creative skills to make the Dussehra crafts like a bow and the arrow and the similar crafts.

>> Play the recitations and hymns highlighting the life story of the Lord Rama.

>> You can also bring the small effigies of the Ravana from the markets and burn them in a nearby ground.
