She was sentenced to six years in prison. Her appeals court overturned her sentence in January 2021.

Arrested for snapping saucy photos at the Pyramid of Djoser

Earlier this week, Egyptian model Salma al Shimi and photographer Houssam Mohamed were arrested at the Saqqara necropolis, twenty miles south of Cairo.

They were taken into custody because they had taken photos without permission in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. They were then released on bail on Tuesday evening.

It was reported that Salma al Shimi had posed in an ancient Egyptian dress in front of the 4700-Year-Old Step Pyramid of Djoser.

The photographs were published on her Instagram account, prompting outrage from both social media users and archeologists.

The photos were branded “inappropriate” and “provocative” by many people. Some even criticized the outfits as disrespectful to Egypt’s ancient heritage.

A source said the police were investigating the incident. They have asked for details about the employee who allowed the model to enter the archaeological area.

They have also quizzed four security personnel. The case has been referred to the Egyptian courts. The photographer and model were arrested later on Monday.
