Today is Labor Day, a national holiday honouring the American labour and one of the country’s ten federal holidays.

Because it is a federal holiday, some services, such as mail delivery and post offices, may be closed or operate with alterations.

Is it true that mail is delivered on Labor Day?

Because Labor Day is a federal holiday, government services such as the US Postal Service may be unavailable, as all non-essential federal employees are given paid time off.

Labor Day’s Background

Labor Day is annually observed on the first Monday in September and honours American workers’ social and economic achievements.

“It is a yearly national tribute to the contributions employees have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country,” according to the US Department of Labor.

Labor Day was initially recognised by the government in 1885 and 1886, when municipal ordinances were approved.

Then a movement arose to secure state legislation, and the first state bill was submitted in the New York legislature on February 21, 1887, but it was Oregon that became the first to become law.

The Labor Day holiday was established in 1887 by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, and by the end of the 1880s, Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had joined them.

By 1894, 23 more states had observed Labor Day, and Congress had approved an act declaring the first Monday in September a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories on June 28, 1894.
