According to reports, the Lions hosted Chicago Bears at Tiger Stadium in October 1974.
As the Lions drove into Chicago territory, Hughes, who was there as an injury replacement, caught a pass from Greg Landry for 32 yards.
It also gave Hughes a first down at Bears’ 37 yard line. Three plays later, Landry throws a tight end pass. Hughes is believed to have died from a heart attack.

The doctors and trainers of both teams observed him, as well as a physician who was also present at the game. All of them ran to Hughes in an effort to save him.
Postmortem examination revealed that Hughes had undiagnosed advanced arteriosclerosis. He also had a history of heart disease.

The lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount of money on October 3, 1974.
