Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to smuggling illegal drugs into the United States

Griner, who was twice a gold medalist at the Olympics, was taken into custody in February by Sheremetyevo airport on suspicion of trying to smuggle hashish oil into Ukraine. Russian customs officials located a small amount cannabis oil in Griner’s bag.

The crime she was accused of carries a mandatory 10-year sentence. Her lawyers claimed that her only use of marijuana was for medicinal purposes. They said the prosecutor’s request for a nine-and-a-half-year sentence was excessive.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in a penal colony in Russia. Experts suspect that the sentence she received may have been politically motivated.
