Meaning of the Vasant Panchami
Basant Panchami, which is commonly known as Sarasvati Pooja is a festival that marks the preparation for the arrival of spring. The festival is celebrated by the Indian people in various states of India in their own style according to their cultures. Basant Panchami also means the beginning of preparation for Holi, which takes place forty days later. This holy Hindu festival is actually dedicated to Goddess Sarasvati, as it symbolizes the beginning of the Spring season in India.
Basant Panchami when the Spring season begins in India and the mustard flowers bloom. It is the color yellow that is linked with the festival, as the entire field becomes a beautiful flower bed of mustard flowers. People wear yellow colored clothes and also eat food that has the color yellow in it – like khichdi, dal, etc. Goddess Sarasvati’s idols are covered in yellow sarees as it is believed that it is one of her favorite colors. Basant Panchami is the time when people start giving the first lessons on education to their children.
History of Basant Panchami
The history associated with the festival says that after Kalidasa was left by his wife, who was a beautiful princess, he planned to kill himself as he completely lost all hopes. When he was about to commit suicide by drowning himself in a river, Goddess Sarasvati appeared out of nowhere from the same waters and asked him to bathe in it. When Kalidasa took a dip in the river its water gave him wisdom and he became a famous poet, thereby telling other devotees to worship her, so she would bless them with gifts of knowledge and wisdom upon them, too.
The Significance of Basant Panchami
The significance of the festival Basant Panchami is big in the Hindu culture. The day is considered extremely blessed to start a new work, to get married or perform house warming ceremony. The color yellow has a great significance in the celebration of the occasion Basant Panchami, as it marks the harvest time of the mustard crop that has yellow blooms and which is also Goddess Saraswati’s favorite color. The Yellow Dress is therefore worn by the devotees of Goddess Saraswati. Moreover, a traditional feast is prepared for the festival wherein the dishes usually color yellow and saffron as a color.

The color of Basant is basically yellow color, which symbolizes Peace, Prosperity, Light, Energy. This is why many of the people wear yellow clothes and make traditional dishes in the yellow color. In the places of Bengal and Bihar, Goddess Saraswati is offered with boondi and ladoo. Sweet rice with saffron and dry fruits is made in almost every house on this day. Mango wood, Coconut, Ganga water are also offered, particularly by the people of Bengalis.

Traditionally, in the places of Punjab, Maake ki Roti and Sarso Ka Saag are made. In Bihar, many people celebrate Saraswati Puja by offering food dishes like Kheer, Malpua and Bundi to the Goddess. Like all festivals, this festival is marked by many traditional delicacies, like khachuri, mixed vegetables, kesar halwa, kesari bhaat, payesh, begun bhaja, sondesh and rajbhog are served as a bhog on this auspicious special day. On Murti Visthapan day, a big processions are organized. The idols of Maa Saraswati are immersed in the holy water of river Ganga with the serenity. This is the day celebrated by dish like Dahi Chura along with gur and banana.
