On Saturday, Duff shared a note titled “For Aaron” on her social media pages to remember the teenager she knew all those years ago. In it, she expressed her sorrow over the loss of someone close to her heart.
“I am deeply sorry that life was so difficult for you and that you had to battle in front of the entire world,” she wrote on Instagram. “Your charm was absolutely infectious… my teenage self would have loved you so dearly.”
She concluded her message by telling Carter to “rest easy” and that she is sending love to his family.

Aaron carter Lizzie McGuire Duff and Aaron Carter began dating when both were 13 years old in 2000, though their on-again/off-again romance ultimately came to an end around 2003.
Carter made a memorable guest appearance on Duff’s Disney Channel series “Lizzie McGuire” in 2001, playing himself and performing an iconic Christmas version of his hit single “I Want Candy.” One iconic moment from that iconic episode features Carter saying, “Merry Christmas, Lizzie McGuire” before they share a kiss.
They were famously part of a love triangle with Lindsay Lohan, who began dating Carter during one of his breakups with Duff. This led to an intense and public feud between the teen queens at that time.
Since then, Carter has expressed his regret over how their relationship ended, declaring his love for Duff throughout the years and declaring to Entertainment Tonight in 2014 that he “was never going to give up on Hilary ever.”
“Don’t be that stupid douche who loses the love of your life forever,” he wrote on Twitter the same year. “I’ll spend the rest of my life striving to improve myself so I can get back to her, no matter what anyone thinks.”
At that time, Duff turned down his advances and insisted their romance had come to an end, insisting it had become a thing of the past.
“I keep seeing him do that,” she confessed to BuzzFeed. “And it makes me uncomfortable; that was so long ago and now we’re still married with a baby – yet still don’t really know each other.” So she continued: “There’s this tension between us…we just kind of see each other as strangers… so yeah.”
Carter went on to start a family of his own with fiancee Melanie Martin, with whom he shared 11-month-old Prince.
