Who do I think will win the Preakness?
Sean Zerillo and Mike Conti of the Action Network provide expert Preakness picks and predictions in the video below:
The Preakness in 2021 will be surrounded by controversy, as Medina Spirit will be one of the ten horses in the race at Pimlico.
Following his victory, the Kentucky Derby winner made news when it was announced that the horse had tested positive for a corticosteroid.
The Bob Baffert-trained colt will be under great scrutiny and has experienced rigorous testing coming up to the race.
Despite this, Medina Spirit remains the overwhelming favourite to win the Preakness.
Assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes stated that the horse is well rested and that his performance at Churchill Downs a fortnight ago will not hinder him (via PaulickReport.com):
“It was nothing in comparison to him. He appeared to have recovered well from the last race and to be in good spirits.
The entire time we’ve been here, he’s been energetic and cheerful. We’ve been blessed with beautiful weather.
We’ve got some pleasant weather, which has greatly aided our efforts. When you’re in that kind of heat, you’re usually knocked out.”
Medina Spirit, the 9-5 morning line favourite, is barely a hair ahead of Concert Tour, who is 5-2. Concert Tour is another Baffert-trained participant who has won a pair of graded stakes without failing any drug tests.
Concert Tour was arguably one of the most hopeful horses heading into his three-year-old season, but his last race was a letdown.
The horse finished third in his first Grade I race in the Arkansas Derby, snapping a three-race winning streak to begin his career.
He hasn’t been seen since, allowing him to recover for more than a month before the Preakness.
According to AP Sports, both of Baffert’s Preakness entrants have been formally cleared to run:
After these two favourites, there’s a bit of a drop-off, albeit Midnight Bourbon has acceptable odds of 5-1.
The horse made a late surge from behind in the Kentucky Derby, but was unable to cover the gap and placed sixth.
The colt finished first at Churchill Downs and will run in the Preakness.
Midnight Bourbon’s trainer, Steve Asmussen, believes the quick turnaround will offer them an advantage this evening.
He remarked the following (through HorseRacingNation.com) on the distances between the New Orleans Derby, when Midnight Bourbon finished second, and the Kentucky Derby:
“With the previous spacing of his races, absolutely. It’s still two weeks until the Derby, but you’re already gaining ground… Coming into the Derby, Midnight Bourbon had a strong track record.
Because of the break, traffic, and other factors, he wasn’t in the best position to run his best race that day.”
A horse like Midnight Bourbon defying the odds tonight would not be surprising.
Although any of the ten participants might wind up with a blanket of black-eyed Susans, the three favourites stand out.
