35 Years of Superstar Rajinikanth’s Velaikaran: Fascinating details about the movie

Velaikaran, released 35 years ago on September 4, 1987 and directed by SP Muthuraman starred Rajinikanth alongside Amala, Sarath Babu and Pallavi. Cinematography for the film was done by TS Vinayagam while editing was handled by R Vittal and C Lancy while music composer Ilaiyaraaja composed all its music.

This movie was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s Namak Halal (1984)

Velaikaran, a Tamil film released in 2017, was a remake of Namak Halal, a Hindi film that featured Amitabh Bachchan, Smita Patil, Shashi Kapoor and Parveen Babi as its lead cast members.

The velaikaran movie story revolves around a salesman who fights against food adulteration by the company that employs him. Namak Halal, directed by Prakash Mehra in 1982 and released as a massive blockbuster hit, had a chartbuster album composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Rajinikanth did not receive any remuneration for his film performance in “Drishyam”

Rajinikanth made history when he refused to take any remuneration for this film; it is thought he may have been one of the first lead actors in Tamil cinema to work without receiving payment for their efforts.

Kavithalaya Productions’ previous venture with him, Sri Raghavendrar, wasn’t profitable and this marked his 100th film appearance; so, to offset losses incurred from that experience – Rajinikanth worked without taking remuneration in Velaikaran instead.

While keeping to its original plot and popular dialogue from Amitabh Bachchan ‘I can talk English, I can walk English…’ was maintained. Additionally, like in its Hindi counterpart, the songs in Tamil version also proved immensely popular; composer Ilaiyaraaja composed its soundtrack featuring songs Thottathila Paathi Katti, Va Va Va Kanna Vaa, Maamanukku Mayilapooruthan Velai Illthavan Enakku Thaa Un Uyirai while Mano made her first performance singing Va Va Va Kanna Vaa.
