Police in New York City are searching for the individual who shot and killed a woman while she was carrying a stroller with a baby who was three months old.
The Manhattan intersection of East 95 Street and Lexington Avenue might see traffic delays because of emergency vehicles, the New York Police Department said on Wednesday night.
The NYPD has now confirmed to PEOPLE that, around 8:23 p.m. local time, it responded to a 911 call in the vicinity. Officers arrived at the scene and discovered a woman, 20, who had been shot in the head. She was taken to Metropolitan Hospital and later declared dead.
According to the NYPD, the victim was pushing a baby stroller that contained a 3-month-old baby. No harm came to the infant. What kind of relationship she has with the child is unclear to the police. The inquiry is still open, and no one has been detained.
According to Deputy Commissioner John Miller, the baby and victim are “believed to be” linked.
Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said the woman was pushing the stroller when the shooter approached her and shot her once from “a pretty close range” before escaping on foot in an eastward direction. The suspect was a male wearing only black, including a hood, sweatpants, and sneakers.
Since tips are “strictly confidential,” she urged anyone with knowledge to phone 1-800-577-TIPS.
The incident, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, “shows how this national epidemic” of gun violence “is hitting families,” regardless of where they live.
Mayor Adams added: “We’re going to track down the person responsible for this terrible act. We’re going to track him down and prosecute him. To ensure that this innocent person obtains the justice we are requesting, the justice system is necessary.”
Authorities are “examining the history,” according to Sewell, and “will have more information in the future.”
A request for comment from PEOPLE was not immediately answered by Mayor Adams’ office.
