Luffy begins his Haki training on Rusukaina Island in One Piece.

Luffy received his training under Rayleigh.

After their victory at Marineford in One Piece series, the Straw Hat Pirates decided to train for life in the New World on separate islands. On Rusukaina Island, Luffy began two-year long training under “Dark King” Rayleigh, who taught him how to use the three types of Haki: Observation Haki, Armament Haki and Conqueror’s Haki. Many fans wonder when does Luffy learn Haki in the series, and the answer is that he learned it during the time skip, between episodes 516 and 517.

Observation Haki can enhance one’s senses, Armament Haki can build physical strength, while Conqueror’s Haki is used to forcefully subjugate opponents or even render them unconscious.

Rusukaina Island proved an indispensable location for Luffy to gain control over Haki, featuring 48 seasons and five hundred animals that could challenge him physically. It pushed Luffy forward as it challenged him and pushed him towards becoming stronger than before.

Rayleigh first displayed all three types of Haki by defeating an elephant, before subjecting Luffy to various tests including blindfolding him for training his observation skills. Luffy learned all three types of Haki as well as the rare Conqueror’s Haki that only few people are born with.

Luffy had used Haki unconsciously before; for instance when he used it to knock Iron Mask Duval’s pet bison Motobaro unconscious or when Ace was about to be executed by Marines; however he was unaware and unaware and thus unable to use Haki at will until that point.

Luffy used Conqueror’s Haki in Episode 518 of the anime to defeat Demalo Black.

Why Luffy needed to learn Haki.

Luffy began training immediately upon recovering physically and psychologically from wounds incurred at Marineford War. To compete against Haki-using pirates he encountered at Marineford, Luffy needed to learn it himself in order to compete.

Luffy’s Devil Fruit Gomu Gomu no Mi isn’t weak, but neither is it the most potent. Only through Luffy’s creativity and dedication were gears created that allowed him to stand a chance against New World Pirates; unfortunately his limited knowledge of Haki prevented this.

Luffy needed to force himself through intense training to gain mastery over Haki in order to safeguard his crew and realize his goal of becoming a pirate king by defeating the Emperors of the Sea and finding One Piece.

Luffy’s journey takes him through different regions where he continues to encounter and discover new things. Now with Advanced Haki and Awakening included into the power system, each fighter’s greatness ultimately rests upon their individual creativity.

Luffy has proven himself an innovative fighter who continually learns, adapts, and optimizes. Learning to control Haki marked a turning point in Luffy’s life.
