Tim Roth was born in London on May 14, 1961, into a family of artists and journalists. Timothy Simon Smith is the actor’s true name. His father changed the British surname “Smith” to the German/Jewish “Roth” during the postwar years.
His actions were motivated by two factors: first, he wanted to show his support for the Holocaust victims; second, he was concerned for the safety of his family because the English weren’t particularly welcome in some of the places where his profession led him.
Tim’s school years were not easy. He was routinely bullied by peers due to his last name and appearance, and teachers were unafraid to employ corporal punishment, which is still permitted in British schools.
The parents, who were by this point separated, made an effort to instill in their kid a love of beauty. Tim was introduced to sculpture and painting by his mother, and music and theater by his father.
