Tiggy Hancock, a 15-year-old horse rider, has been touted as a rising star in showjumping competitions. She was from Bagenalstown, Co Carlow, and came from a family with a long history in horse competition, according to the Independent.
She was a member of the Carlow and Kilkenny Hunt Pony Club for many years and a very accomplished working hunter pony competition. Horse Sport Ireland noted, “Tiggy was a highly gifted young athlete and a respected member of our pony high performance eventing programme” (HSI).
It went on to say: “Tiggy only started eventing in the autumn of 2018, but she has already made an impact on the sport. “She was chosen to represent Ireland in the Under-16 European Eventing Team Championships in Poland, where she and her teammates won a team bronze medal.
“Tiggy has just recently wowed senior competitors, with Coppenagh Spring Sparrow placing just outside the podium, defeating seasoned athletes who have competed at European and world level. “Tiggy was adored by both junior and older members of the Irish equestrian family, and her death will be deeply regretted by everybody.
“Those who know the Hancock family will share their sadness. They are well-known throughout Ireland for their dedication to the equestrian community.” On Facebook, the Irish Pony Society stated: “The sudden death of one of our beloved members, Tiggy Hancock, has surprised and devastated everyone in the society.
“The IPS expresses its heartfelt condolences to her family and many friends. “Tiggy was a terrific and gifted young rider who served as an inspiration to many of our members. “Her achievements in the IPS and all equestrian sports, both here and in the United Kingdom, are well known.
“[Tiggy’s] beautiful grin, thanks, and happiness in win and defeat will be remembered forever. “All who had the pleasure of spending time with her will be sorely missed.”
According to the Greenogue Equestrian Centre in Dublin, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the poor child’s family and friends. “She was a legend in the equestrian world and would be much missed.”
Friends who have been devastated by Tiggy’s death have paid tribute to her on social media.
“Rip tiggy…forever in our hearts,” one wrote.
Tiggy’s Death Cause
According to HSI, Tiggy Hancock died on Wednesday, June 16th, “after a sad accident at a squad training event in Greenogue, Dublin.” She was transferred to Crumlin’s Our Lady’s Hospital, but she died there later.
Tiggy was believed to have fallen from a horse during a jump. “It’s always difficult to fathom the death of a child or a teenager.
“For many of Tiggy’s teammates and friends in the sport, this will be a trying moment. “Horse Sport Ireland has a designated support person to assist those who have been affected, and they or their parents are encouraged to seek help.
“The Spring Show scheduled for this weekend in Raheen Na Gun will not take place,” the Irish Pony Society announced on Facebook.
An investigation into the teen’s death is underway, according to Dublin police, and a case is being produced for the coroner. “This unfortunate incident has been reported to the coroner. “The Health and Safety Authority has also been contacted, and an examination will be conducted tomorrow, Thursday, June 17th, 2021.”
