Rod Wave (born Rodarius Marcell Green) came from an impoverished and violent neighborhood in St. Petersburg, Florida and began making music at 14 after being inspired by his father – himself an established rapper – as his source. Following several arrests and dropping out of high school to focus on music full-time after spending some time in jail, he released his debut mixtape called “Hunger Games” in 2017 which quickly gained him popularity due to its emotive blend of hip-hop, R&B, and soul influences.

Rod Wave made his breakthrough in 2019 when he released his sophomore album “Ghetto Gospel”, which reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart and was executive produced by Kevin Gates (his mentor and friend), producing “Heart on Ice”, a platinum single which earned Rod Wave his first Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Performance.

Rod Wave released two critically-acclaimed albums in 2020: “Pray 4 Love” and “SoulFly Deluxe”, both debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. Additionally, he signed an Interscope Records deal reportedly worth $10 million that cemented his status as one of the most successful and influential rap artists, earning praise from both fans and critics for his authentic storytelling and relatable themes.

A Reflection of His Journey

Rod Wave’s fifth album “SoulFly” is an exploration of his journey from poverty to riches, including all of its challenges and difficulties along the way. The cover represents both his rise to success as seen by travelling around in a private jet but also feelings of loneliness when gazing upon the stars wondering where he belongs; while his suitcase symbolises both past memories as well as any current pain he is carrying around with him.

“SoulFly” is a reference to his spiritual and emotional state as he searches for peace and happiness in life. His songs touch upon depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction as well as love, loyalty, and gratitude he feels towards others in his life – as well as critics, haters, doubters trying to bring him down or undermine his authenticity – while simultaneously affirming God, hope for the future, and his desire to inspire others through music.

Rod Wave’s debut album stands as a testament to his talent, resilience, and evolution as both an artist and individual. Proving his abilities not just as a rapper but as an expressive singer/songwriter who touches millions with their music; showing he’s not afraid to express himself openly regardless of dark or painful memories; being true to who he is while telling his tale; this soul flyer continues his journey upward while never forgetting where his life began.
