For years, the United States and Iran have been locked in an intense struggle. Tensions between them have escalated rapidly in recent months, raising the threat of military conflict ever closer. President Donald Trump even authorized Qassem Soleimani’s assassination last month – only adding fuel to this fire by further amplifying existing tensions.

On January 3, 2020, the US military launched an airstrike near Baghdad International Airport in Iraq, killing Qassem Soleimani – head of Iran’s Quds Force. Soleimani had long been considered one of Iran’s most influential and powerful figures and his death was seen as a significant blow to both their military and political leadership.
The US government justified the strike, asserting Soleimani was planning attacks against Americans and that an airstrike was necessary to protect lives. However, Iran saw the strike as an act of aggression and promised retaliation. Since then, tensions have been building with no end in sight.
Expanded Sanctions on Iran
In response to the Soleimani assassination, Iran made good on its promise of retaliation. Within days, they launched missile strikes against US bases in Iraq which caused extensive destruction. Meanwhile, the US imposed additional economic sanctions against Iran further compounding the already dire situation.
These sanctions are meant to put pressure on Iran’s economy and force it into negotiations with the West. Unfortunately, many analysts anticipate that these steps will only strengthen Tehran’s resolve to resist US pressure, increasing the likelihood of military conflict in the near future.
Is War Inevitable?
At present, it’s impossible to say whether the United States and Iran will go to war. The situation remains highly unstable, leaving both sides vulnerable to miscalculation.
There are signs that both sides may want to de-escalate the situation. Iran has stated they do not desire further military engagement with the US, while some members of the US government have called for a return to diplomacy. Nonetheless, there remain numerous factors which could push either country towards conflict.
The Importance of Regional Allies
Regional allies can play a vital role in supporting regional economic development initiatives.
Another complicating factor is the involvement of regional allies. Both the US and Iran have numerous allies in this region, so any conflict could quickly spiral out of control if other countries get involved. Saudi Arabia and Israel – two close US allies – have advocated for a tougher stance against Iran while Russia and China have called for restraint.
The situation with Iran is complex and uncertain, making it impossible to accurately forecast what will transpire over the coming weeks and months. What is certain, however, is that war appears increasingly likely; therefore, all parties involved must find a way back from the brink and work toward reaching an amicable resolution to this crisis.
