Recently, films set in small towns across north India have explored narratives which portray a clash between modernity and traditional conservative ideologies and ideologies associated with them – which often result in interesting stories – but when handled too rigidly or presented using old formulaic formats they become intolerable.
‘Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana’ is one such film that beautifully captures the conflict between domesticity and career ambitions. The cast of Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana, featuring Satyendra (Rajkummar Rao) and Aarti (Kriti Kharbanda), brings to life the story of a couple at a crossroads; Aarti, on her wedding day, chooses her newly secured career as an Indian Administrative Service officer over married life, leaving Satyendra and his family in a state of shock and betrayal.
Satyendra loses faith in love and marriage due to Satyendra losing faith both within himself as well as having to bear shame because of a failed marriage that never really existed.
Things take an unexpected twist when Satyendra, an excise clerk turned senior IAS officer, seeks revenge against Aarti by falsely accusing her of bribery. What ensues is an unforgettable love story where both learn that regardless of their selfish motives they still deeply love each other.
This film’s predictable tale makes for a disinterested viewing experience. Rao excels as a performer who captures the sensibilities of someone from a small-town environment; from accent, pronunciation or mannerisms he manages to capture them all convincingly as an innocent youngster from Kanpur unprepared to face reality head on.
Newcomer Kharbanda stands out with her role playing that of an innocent small-town girl in impressive fashion; indeed the performances alone should make this fil compelling viewing. All-in-all it should be watched because of their performances alone.
