The film ‘Nail Polish’, set in Lucknow and featuring the nail polish cast including Sameer Dharmadhikari as DCP Sunil Sachdev, unfolds a gripping narrative where DCP Sachdev uncovers harrowing evidence that children of migrant workers are being abducted, murdered, and their remains horrifically burned.

Veer Singh (Manav Kaul), an unexpected suspect, works as an undercover spy during his military service and later retired to live a comfortable, honorable life working as a coach in a sports academy.

Siddharth Jaisingh, better known as Sid (Arjun Rampal), an esteemed defence attorney agrees to represent Veer as promised a Rajya Sabha seat if successful in winning his case, while state public prosecutor Amit Kumar (Anand Tiwari) is hired by them both in an attempt to convict Veer in courtroom trial where drama unfolds with unexpected turns demonstrating there’s more going on than meets the eye.

Legal dramas can be difficult genres to tackle without falling prey to its tropes, yet Bugs Bhargava Krishna has accomplished an exceptional job as both director and writer of his film. Without wastefulness or preamble, Bugs gets right down to business.

He quickly takes us through all of the evidence which could show Veer to be guilty, captivating audiences early on before ultimately being predictable in its outcome. Still, both the backstories and court proceedings of this murder trial are skillfully interwoven to keep viewers guessing until its dramatic climax. Sanjay Wandrekar’s background score adds further drama. Overall, “Nail Polish” draws upon true events but lacks the expected tension from such films.

Manav Kaul steals the show as Veer Singh. His character exhibits many sides; at times being calm and lawful citizen; yet in an instant becoming aggressive towards a fellow prisoner. Furthermore, his body language and dialogue delivery change effortlessly to reflect this ever-evolving character. Time after time he has proven that he can play various characters effectively.

Everyone puts in an impressive performance. Arjun Rampal shines as Sid Jaisingh, an ambitious lawyer defending Veer for selfish motives with high political aspirations. His commanding presence is quite overwhelming.

Rajit Kapur gives an impressive turn as Judge Kishore Bhushan; his relationship with Madhoo Shah’s Shobha (Shobha in real life), his onscreen wife Shobha, makes for some touching scenes between them; Anand Tiwari stands out in comparison with Rampal as Amit Kumar while providing support throughout this storyline. The remaining cast provide necessary help pushing along this narrative forward.

All things considered, ‘Nail Polish’ is an engaging thriller worth seeing for its story and performances alone.
