“Benitez has departed Everton with immediate effect after joining the club in June 2021.
“In due course, an update on a permanent replacement will be provided.”
Due to his previous association with bitter rivals Liverpool, with whom he won the Champions League in 2005, the Spaniard was not a popular choice among Toffees fans.
After a promising start to the season, things swiftly deteriorated, with the team going without a league win from late September to early December.
After a derby day humiliation at the hands of Liverpool and a 3-1 away defeat by Crystal Palace, a surprising win over Arsenal temporarily raised morale, but the writing was on the wall for the Spaniard.
Everton appeared to be back on track after a point away at Chelsea, but a disappointing defeat by the Seagulls and a dreadful loss at Norwich City on Saturday – either side of a narrow FA Cup win over Hull City – proved to be Benitez’s final acts in charge.
After Everton’s 2-1 loss to the Canaries, several visiting fans at Carrow Road held banners demanding for Benitez’s departure, and Everton’s board of directors conducted an emergency meeting.
Farhad Moshiri, the club’s owner, then took the final decision on the Spaniard’s future, and is now on the lookout for his sixth permanent manager in as many years.
