Mott Haven was established in 1849 by Jordan Lawrence Mott, a wealthy industrialist who built ironworks along the Harlem River. Over time, it became an epicenter of manufacturing and commerce, drawing in immigrants from different nationalities and backgrounds. Mott Haven boasts several historic landmarks like its Historic District with rows of brownstone houses dating back to late 19th-century America; this landmark was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

According to the 2010 Census of Mott Haven’s population was 52,413, of whom 72.3% were Hispanic or Latino while 24.7% were Black or African American while only 1.7% White 0.4% Asian 1 were other races or ethnicities and one percentage point were other ethnicities or races / Mott Haven also boasts many immigrants from countries like Mexico Dominican Republic Puerto Rico Ecuador Honduras and Jamaica among many others.

Many initiatives and organizations focus on improving life quality while simultaneously working toward social justice in Mott Haven. La Morada, for example, is a family-run Mexican restaurant which also functions as a community center and sanctuary for undocumented immigrants. Restaurants such as The Point Community Development Corporation (CDC), which empower youth and adults through arts-and-culture programs, education initiatives, environmental advocacy projects and social enterprises – also host events such as poetry readings, book launches, art exhibits and workshops related to immigration rights, food justice and environmental concerns.
