Microsoft has added Fortnite to Xbox Cloud Gaming, making the hit game available to stream for free with no subscription.
This is the first game that’s free to play on Xbox Cloud Gaming, with Microsoft looking forward to adding more.
It’s also a workaround for smartphone users who weren’t able to access the game on iOS because of a battle between Epic Games and Apple over microtransactions.
This could boost Xbox Cloud Gaming, and increase sign-ups to Game Pass Ultimate (a subscription that lets players play an extensive catalog of Xbox games on multiple devices).

If you want to play Fortnite without a dedicated gaming console, you can now do so via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
This service allows you to stream games to devices like iOS and Android phones or tablets, as well as Windows PCs.
This is a major step for Microsoft in the free-to-play space. The company says it is looking to expand its offerings in this area and Fortnite is the first title to make the move.
You will need to have a Microsoft account, and an Xbox Cloud Gaming-compatible device.
You can use an iPhone, iPad or Android phone/tablet, or a Windows PC, as long as you have a decent internet connection.
It will stream from Xbox servers so there may be some quality compromises or increased latency when playing on mobile browsers.
This also means that you’ll need a relatively fast internet connection to avoid issues.
Streaming
Fortnite is one of the most loved games in the world and can now be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The first game available to play for free on Xbox Cloud Gaming is Fortnite. More games are in the works.
The game’s streaming feature is a huge win for both Epic and Microsoft.
This allows the game to be played by users that were blocked from downloading iOS apps during Apple’s spat.
It also encourages people to join the Xbox ecosystem, and sign up for Game Pass.
Streaming requires a strong internet connection. Microsoft recommends a minimum rate of 10 Mbps on mobile devices, 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets, and a 5Ghz Wi-Fi or mobile data connection for the best performance.
The service has seen a significant spike in lifetime users, according to Microsoft, rising from about 10 million in April to more than 20 million now.
The company says this is almost certainly the result of Fortnite’s popularity.
No Game Pass required
Fortnite, one of the world’s most popular games, is now playable on iOS and Android devices through a new Xbox Cloud Gaming feature.
The new feature does not require a game pass subscription, and you can stream Fortnite to your phone.
Xbox Cloud Gaming allows users to play multiple games, such as Xbox, Windows, Android and iOS from a browser or via an app.
The service is only available in 26 countries at present, but Microsoft says it will expand it over time.
The company released a cloud-based version of Fortnite that is free to all users on the Xbox Cloud Gaming platform in May.
This is a huge development for Epic Games and Microsoft, as it reintroduces the game to mobile gamers who were previously blocked due to Apple’s app store restrictions.
To access the Fortnite app through Xbox Cloud Gaming, you’ll need to sign in to your Microsoft account and a supported browser-enabled iOS or Android phone, tablet or Windows PC. Once you’re signed in, the game will automatically load on your device.
