In his reign, trade and agriculture flourished and the subjects of the kingdom lived in peace.

He had a strong sense of public duty and had an able administration.

His taxation system, based on the Sastric Laws, helped to improve the economic stability of the kingdom. In addition, he was a patron of Brahmanism and Jainism.

Gautami Putra Satakarni ruled over Malwa

Gautami Putra Satakarni ruled over Malwa, Avanti and Akara in Western Malwa, modern Kathiawad and Vidarbha in the Berar region.

He also ruled over Suratha, a town in the Godavari basin, and Anupa on the Narmada river bank.

He defeated the Sakas and Yavanas and annexed northern Konkan, Maharashtra and the western Rajputana. In the second half of the 2nd century A.D., his kingdom expanded to Gujarat, the western Rajputana, northern Maharashtra and the western Deccan.

A kind king who cared about his subjects’ well-being

Known as the Lord of the Western Vindhyas, Gautamiputra Satakarni was the most powerful king in western India.

His empire included the Suratha or Kathiawad, Avanti or Western Malwa, and Aparanta or northern Konkan. His rule improved the condition of agriculture and helped the poor people.

Gautamiputra Satakarni was a staunch Hindu who was known for his kindness. He was also a war-hero who led a successful campaign against foreign Saka rulers.

In fact, he was the first Satavahana king to issue coins in native Indian languages. His numismatic legacy can be seen in his coin legends. These were in Tamil, Kannada, and Prakrit.

Gautamiputra Satakarni is referred to in the Puranas. He is reputed for being the founder of the Satavahana dynasty and as the most successful monarch.

He was also a good administrator and had peace and prosperity. His descendants seem to have commissioned many religious structures.

In the Vayu Purana, Shivasvati is named as Gautamiputra’s forefather. However, she is not mentioned in the Vishnu Purana.

Inscriptions on the gateways of Sanchi Stupa

Located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Sanchi is a small village that is famous for its ancient Stupas.

The Great Stupa of Sanchi attracts thousands of visitors each year. Its four gateways are also well-known.

The gateways are circular in shape, and they are composed of two strong square pillars. They are topped with sculptured animals and dwarfs.

The four gateways of the Sanchi Stupa were erected in the 1st century B.C. They are carved in relief sculpture, which depicts different events in the life of Lord Buddha.

They also mention donors from all over India. The names of the donors are written on the stones inside the monument.

The Southern Gateway is the oldest of the four gates. It has carvings of several miracles that were performed by the Buddha. It also has scenes from the Mara temptation and Chhaddanta Jataka tale.

The Eastern Gateway has an architrave that portrays Buddha leaving the royal life and going to find the Bodhi tree. It also contains the story of Buddha’s first sermon.

He was the son of Gautami Balasri. He ruled over a territory which included northern Deccan and included the present-day regions of Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Vidarbha, Aparanta or eastern Malwa and Gujarat.

After Gautamiputra’s death, his son Vashishthiputra Pulumayi became the immediate successor.
