Loni Kaye Anderson, born August 5, 1945, is an American actress. She was the receptionist on the CBS sitcom WKRP (Cincinnati) (1978-1982). This show earned her three Golden Globe Awards as well as two Emmy nominations.

Anderson was born in Saint Paul (Minnesota), the daughter of Klaydon Carl Anderson (Environmental Chemist) and Maxine Hazel(nee Kallin), who were both models.

She was raised in suburban Roseville and Minnesota. She was a senior at Alexander Ramsey Senior School in Roseville and was named Valentine Queen at the Valentine’s Day Winter Formal 1963.

She explains in My Story in High Heels that her father originally wanted to name her Leiloni.

However, she realized that it would be too confusing for her as she reached her teens and it would become “Lay Loni”. So it was changed to Loni.

Acting was her first step in acting. She played a small part in the movie Nevada Smith (1966), which starred Steve McQueen.

She was almost unemployed for almost a decade after that film, and then she received guest roles on TV series in the mid-1970s.

Two episodes of S.W.A.T. were her first appearances. She also appeared on the sitcom Phyllis and the detective series Police Woman, Harry O.

She was well-respected for the role as Chrissy in the sitcom Three’s Company. Although she did not win the role, she was a guest star on the 1978 season 2 episode as Susan Walters. This appearance brought her to the attention ABC.

Anderson was most well-known for her role as the sultry receptionist Jennifer Marlowe in the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati (1978-1982).

Producers saw her in a red swimsuit and offered her the role. This pose was similar to Farrah Farrah’s famous 1976 poster.

Hugh Wilson later stated that Anderson was offered the role due to her physique resembling Jayne Mansfield and her innocent sexuality Marilyn Monroe.

The series was not able to reach the Nielsen ratings for most of its four-year run. However, it enjoyed strong popularity among young adults, teens, and disc jockeys.

Anderson, who was the series’ “main attraction”, walked off the sitcom in 1980 and requested a significant salary increase.

While she was negotiating her contract, Anderson starred in the CBS made for television film The Jayne Mansfield Story (1980).

She returned to the series after the network granted her request. This continued until the series’ cancellation in 1982. It is still very popular in syndicatation all over the world.

Anderson has been married four more times. She was married to three men in her first marriage: Bruce Hasselberg (1964-1966), Ross Bickell (73-1981), as well as actor Burt Reynolds (1988-1994). She married Bob Flick on May 17, 2008. He was one of the founders of the folk band the Brothers Four.

Anderson is the mother of two children, Deidra (fathered in Hasselberg) and Quinton (born in 1988). Reynolds and Anderson adopted Andrea in 1995.

Anderson grew up in a family that smoked. She became the spokesperson for COPD Together in 1999.
