Carpenter and O’Donnell started dating at a time when same-sex relationships were frowned upon. They married in San Francisco in 2004, only a few weeks after the city began allowing same-sex marriages.
Following their wedding, they decided to expand their family by adopting children. Chelsea and Blake, their daughter, were welcomed into the family. Carpenter also adopted Parker, a kid O’Donnell adopted before they married, and later used artificial insemination to have a daughter named Vivienne.
WHAT WAS IT THAT BROKED THEM UP?
Carpenter and O’Donnell were diametrically opposed in almost every way, and this was one of the reasons that pushed them apart. Carpenter has been described as “super-organized,” whilst her ex has been described as “messy.”
They lived very different lives. O’Donnell was reportedly at her best while painting, visiting her Miami home, and spending time on the water.
WHEN DID IT COME TO AN END?
Carpenter and O’Donnell broke their romance in 2007, but did not publicly announce their breakup until 2009. Carpenter just hinted that they were at a fork in the path at the time.
They are a family, according to O’Donnell, and will always be a family. She also stated that they are both attempting to resolve their differences.
O’Donnell had implied that she and Carpenter were over on her blog at the time of the interview, but she refused to reveal that the producer had moved out of their New York house and into Manhattan.
Even though both sides were more concerned about the safety of the four children they were in charge of, they were unable to stay together.
GOING FORWARD
