On Monday, the Department of Telecom (DoT) released yet another warning, urging online retailers and others to refrain from publicizing, offering for sale, or giving away wireless jammers.

The use of cellular signal jammers, GPS blockers, and other signal jamming devices has been deemed to be generally prohibited, unless expressly authorized by the Government of India, the department said in a statement.

Jammers cannot be purchased or used in India by private companies or individuals.

Additionally, it stated that signal jamming devices may not be advertised, sold, distributed, imported, or otherwise marketed in India unless specifically approved by the regulations.

“An amplifier of some form called a mobile signal booster or repeater is reportedly used to augment cell phone signal reception.

However, the quality and coverage of public telecommunications services can be jeopardized by the illicit use of mobile phone boosters, which can negatively affect and interrupt such services.

This puts the public’s health and safety at risk by making it more difficult for mobile phone users to use emergency call services, in addition to causing inconvenience to them “in accordance with the rules.

According to the DoT, consumers should contact the relevant TSP to address any issues they may be having with connectivity or service quality.

Additionally, the DoT had earlier advised all online retailers against promoting or enabling the sale of wireless jammers on their websites.

Currently, only states/UTs, the armed forces, and central police agencies are permitted to purchase and operate jammers (only models that have been approved by the Indian government).

After receiving prior approval from the appropriate authorities as specified in the rules, examination conducting bodies under the control of the Union Government, State Government, or Union Territory are also permitted to install jammers (from authorized vendors & approved models).
