Derek Jacobi is returning, and “Gladiator” Sequel Adds Fred Hechinger and May Calamawy

Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel has completed casting with May Calamawy (Moon Knight, “Ramy”), Peter Mensah (“Avatar”), Matt Lucas (“Wonka,” Bridesmaids) as well as Derek Jacobi reprising his role from its 2000 predecessor film.

Fred Hechinger of “Kraven the Hunter” and “The White Lotus” fame is in negotiations to assume Emperor Geta as soon as Barry Keoghan steps aside due to scheduling conflicts.

These newcomers join an already stellar cast led by Oscar nominee Paul Mescal and two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington; with “Stranger Things” star Joseph Quinn set to portray Emperor Caracalla and Pedro Pascal currently negotiating an undisclosed role.

Paramount Pictures’ release set for November 22nd 2024 remains mostly a secret. No details regarding plot details have been made known at this point.

“Gladiator” was an enormous critical and commercial success, grossing $460 million at the box office and winning five Academy Awards – including best picture. Starring Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius – an imprisoned Roman soldier seeking revenge against Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).

Following Maximus’ passing at the end of “Gladiator”, its sequel centers around Lucius Mescal; Connie Nielsen reprises her role of Lucilla while Jacobi takes over Jacobi’s character Gracchus/Gracchus).

David Scarpa will write the script for Scott Free’s sequel movie. Michael Pruss will serve as director and produce through Scott Free, with Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher from Red Wagon Entertainment as producers alongside Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald Raymond Kirk Aidan Elliott executive producing.

Returning from previous efforts include cinematographer John Mathieson as cinematographer; production designer Arthur Max as production designer and costume designer Janty Yates as costume designer from its prequel efforts.
