The Suspect

Carlos Dominguez, 21, was a third-year student at UC Davis stabbing news until April 25 when he was temporarily removed for “academic reasons,” according to university reports. On Friday May 5 he pleaded not guilty and was denied bail by a judge who noted the “egregious and dangerous nature” of his alleged crimes; due to an additional enhancement alleging multiple murders if found guilty he could potentially face life without parole or even the death penalty if found guilty.

The Victims

David Breaux, 50, was discovered lying unresponsive on a bench in Central Park on the morning of April 27. He had suffered multiple stab wounds and was declared deceased upon arriving. Breaux was well-known in his community, often collecting recyclables or offering flowers to passersby.

Karim Abou Najm, 22, was a student at UC Davis majoring in computer science. On Saturday evening near Oxford Circle Park in Davis a mile from campus he was fatally stabbed by unknown assailants. Abou Najm was described by friends and family members as kind-hearted yet intelligent person with a promising future ahead.

Kimberlee Guillory, 23, was attacked on Monday evening near Anderson Road and Villanova Drive near campus and sustained “seriously wounds,” needing emergency surgery at UC Davis Medical Center before recovering at home. Guillory is currently studying plant biology.

The Motive

Motive The motive for these stabbings remains unclear, although police claim to have evidence linking Dominguez to all three attacks; however, no details were given by them regarding his connection to victims whom appear to have been selected at random.

The Reaction

Reaction The series of stabbings at UC Davis and in Davis have shocked students, faculty and residents alike who enjoy its low crime rate and peaceful atmosphere. Residents, students and faculty have expressed shock, sadness and fear following these incidents; students have held vigils and memorial services in honor of victims while showing their families support; others have demanded increased security measures on and off campus.

The university is providing counseling and other resources for those impacted by violence at its campus, while encouraging anyone with information regarding stabbings to contact either law enforcement or report it via their online system.
