Count Dankula Sentence: Youtuber Avoids Jail After Conviction for Teaching Nazi Salute to Pet Pug
A Scottish YouTuber who was convicted of a hate crime after releasing a video of himself teaching his girlfriend’s dog to give the Nazi salute escaped prison.
Following a trial in March, Mark Meechan, 30, of North Lanarkshire, Scotland, was found guilty and fined £800 ($1117) in connection with the video, which he uploaded in 2016.
Meechan, also known as Count Dankula, explained in the video how he intended to bother his girlfriend as a joke, so he transformed her beloved pug, Buddha, into the character “I couldn’t think of anything more adorable.
Religion is something I absolutely despise. For 40 years, I’ve chastised and mocked it “Added he. “However, if my government sought to outlaw or criminalise it, I’d march alongside those poor fools and fight tooth and nail for their right to believe whatever fucking rubbish they want.”
The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities applauded Meechan’s conviction and claimed they got hundreds of anti-Semitic threats online after their director, Ephraim Borowski, was asked to testify at the trial.
“We appreciate the court’s recognition that repeatedly chanting ‘Gas the Jews’ is not a joke, and that pretending something is a comedy does not make it any less unpleasant,” the group said in a statement.
“This case was not about whether the video was a ‘joke,’ but about whether it was intended to offend; Meechan made it clear both in the video and in court that that was his intention, and instead of apologising or expressing regret, he is now portraying himself as a martyr and has been embraced by the extreme right.”
