New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley Exercising Patience In Return From ACL Injury

barkley injuryBarkley injury : New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who is continuing his rehab from a torn ACL suffered early last season, is taking just one day at a time.

That’s all he can do, considering he’s never before gone through an injury or the ensuing rehab this significant in his life.

While Barkley would love for nothing better than to have a date circled on his calendar, all he can do at this point as the Giants veterans begin their six-week break before the start of training camp is keep working to strengthen his surgically repaired knee and hope for the best.

“I come in every single day just trying to work as hard as I can,” Barkley said last week. “Being patient, listening to the team, listening to the trainers and listening to the doctors.

I’m out there, there’s drills that you go through and you’re just trying to see where you’re at and there’s some things that I do that I know that my rehab is going really well.”

The Giants have done their best not to attach a timeline to Barkley’s return out of concern that if they put a hard deadline date out there, Barkley could potentially rush and compromise all the months of hard work he’s put in.

While the team was going through its OTAs and then its three-day mandatory minicamp, workouts in the late morning/early afternoon, Barkley was on a different schedule.

He would hit the grass field with a trainer in the morning and then return inside the team’s East Rutherford, New Jersey facility just as his teammates were getting ready to go outside.

Once he was inside, Barkley would continue his workouts in the team’s weight room, which features several large windows overlooking the team’s grass practice fields, his gaze often landing on what was taking place outside.

“Yeah, I do peek through the window and watch practice,” he admitted somewhat sheepishly.

“I’m really excited about the offensive weapons we added, not just offensive weapons that we added; all the weapons we added and all the people we signed.

I think we have a lot of talent and we have a chance to be very special.”

But when Barkley can join that something special the Giants are building is unknown.

While the best-case scenario would be for him to be ready to go at the start of training camp, he must first pass a training camp physical.

And if he can’t pass that physical when the team reports to training camp on July 27, he will land on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list, where he will count against the team’s training camp roster and where once he can pass a physical, he can immediately be removed from the PUP list and allowed to practice.

But even if Barkley can pass a physical, that doesn’t mean all restrictions currently on what he can do on the field will be lifted.

He won’t play in the team’s three preseason games, and it’s widely expected that the Giants will slowly ease him back into the daily grind, with all eyes closely watching his every move for any signs of a potential setback.

If Barkley has any concerns about his rehab not working out, he’s trying to keep that in check.

“I have just belief in that you can control what you can control,” he said.

“Both times that I’ve been so far in any NFL career were things that really nothing I could have done to change.”

But as for being ready for Week 1, Barkley again side-stepped the question seeking a definitive date on his return.

“I know, from (Head) Coach (Joe) Judge from the training room from top to bottom from my teammates, they want to see me healthy, but they want me out there when they know I can be out there,” he said.

“For me it’s coming to into work every single day so I can be a help to my team, and we have a successful season.”
