Both classic 6 against 6 levels and the new vehicle-centric Combined Arms mode and maps are included in the Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Open Alpha.
Three modes will be available for the 6 vs 6 maps: Team Deathmatch (TDM), Kill Confirmed, and Domination.
Treyarch has implemented new, wider capture zones for the last of the three, which should be intriguing.

Miami
This is a night map set amid Miami’s neon-lit streets, right on the beach. Treyarch’s official description is as follows:
“Perseus has intercepted a prison transport vehicle using paid DGI soldiers, with CIA agents arriving to take them out in the heat of Miami’s South Beach.
“Operators struggle between buildings, on the streets, and on a stretch of the seashore itself, amid art deco architecture and neon lights.
Sharpshooters can take advantage of vistas across deserted streets and beaches from various rooftops and windows, which operate as great longshot positions.
“In the meantime, in close-quarters action, Operators can weave in and out of unoccupied tourist traps, exploiting areas of a parking garage or the seashore to flank enemy combatants.”
Satellite
This is a cool-looking desert map set in the Angolan desert near the crash site of a satellite. According to Treyarch’s description:
Satellite is situated in an Angolan desert where a KH-9 American-made satellite has been downed, as first teased in the Black Ops Cold War Reveal video.
“With the exception of the satellite in question in the middle of the map, Soviet and American soldiers land on a battlefield free of any man-made buildings.
Aside from this heavily fortified focal location, the map’s rocky outcroppings and archways give several flanking paths and shelter.
“Alternatively, the natural sand dunes on the other side of the map provide ideal sniper area, at the cost of any substantial protection from airborne Scorestreaks or a cross-map high-caliber bullet.”
Update: I didn’t realise there was a Moscow map in the alpha until I started playing.
It’s a city map with several streets, hallways, tiny and huge rooms, sharp corners, and so on. The official description is as follows:
“A Spetsnaz squad was dispatched to a compromised CIA safe house in the heart of the Soviet Union in order to secure the location.
Catch any remaining CIA operatives, and gather more intelligence on NATO’s future plans.
According to initial accounts, the location has become hot, with combat spilling into the streets, causing a second CIA-JSOC squad to arrive as reinforcements.
“Fighting will take place in and around an imposing metro station, with Moscow’s streets, as well as surrounding apartment complexes and hotels, serving as roads leading back to that central, marble-adorned transportation hub.
“When travelling through the streets, stationary vehicles will be important cover pieces since they may assist break up sightlines that snipers will wish to exploit.
CQB operators may want to sweep across the different buildings, and they might be a critical cog in defending the metro building at all five of its entrances.”
Dominance through Combined Arms
This is the Ground War mode from Black Ops Cold War, although unlike that game, it has a smaller team size, with each side having just 12 players.
Tanks, Snowmobiles, Wakerunners, and Gunboats are used in this mode, which takes place on larger areas (among other vehicles).
Players in Combined Arms: Domination will earn points in the same way they do in ordinary Domination. There will be two maps in this mode.
Armada
This is a ship-based level in which players compete across many ships, utilising watercraft and lengthy sight lines. The following is the description:
“The year is 1984, and the United States and the Soviet Union are slugging it out in the North Atlantic Ocean for a prototype nuclear submarine.
“Competing squads will battle it out on the high seas with battles on numerous ships, navigating the treacherous waters below with ziplines, rappel lines, and various seacraft.
“The centre ship is a hotspot for all types of combat, from close-quarters conflicts in control stations to sniper duels with nearby ships to underwater warfare.
Keep your head on a swivel and investigate every nook and crevice of the map for fresh entryways to each target point.”
Crossroads
This is a winter map set in the USSR’s far reaches during a NATO ambush of a Soviet convoy. The following is the description:
“NATO soldiers ambushed a massive military convoy of mobile ICBM launchers in the middle of the freezing Soviet tundra.
“Operators will use tanks and snowmobiles to plough through the frozen tundra’s banks and groves, which might serve as temporary houses for sharpshooters hunting for longshot possibilities.
“Those plotting their triumph strategy should think about seizing possession of the communications station, the lone facility in the middle of the iced-over lake.
Alternatively, if you’re not terrified of heights, try crossing the crumbling bridge that spans a fatal chasm to flank the opposition team.”
Scorestreaks, Gunsmith, and Create-A-Class are some of the games available.
Players will get a taste of the various systems Treyarch has included in Black Ops Cold War, in addition to new modes and maps to try out.
This includes the return of the Gunsmith system from Modern Warfare 2, which was a foregone conclusion given that the two games share the free-to-play Warzone.
Which I’m still not sure how it’ll all work out. Treyarch, for example, has tweaked the jump-to-run mobility algorithm.
Is that change visible in Warzone right now?
In any event, during the Alpha, the new Gunsmith, Create-A-Class, and Scorestreak systems will be in place.
Killstreaks have been replaced with Scorestreaks, which are computed in a new and significantly more complicated fashion.
With multipliers added for kills that can increase the amount of points you get for objective play. New Field Upgrades, as well as Wild Cards, will be accessible.
This isn’t the last time you can play Cold War before it goes live. In October, the game’s two Beta weekends will take place.
I’ll be playing the alpha today and this weekend and will come back with my thoughts and film. Keep an eye out
