Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure. For those who are moving out of mom and dad’s house, it’s a chance to truly live on their own for the first time. For newlyweds, it’s the beginning of a new life together. In the case of retirees, it’s an opportunity to dive into the next phase of their lives.

That being said, moving can also be a stressful, chaotic experience. Many people are quick to point out that no matter how hard you try to maintain control over the situation, something is bound to go wrong at some point. Certain measures can help eliminate much of the disorder and ensure the process goes smoothly.

1) Organization Is Essential

First of all, it’s important to get organized from the beginning. That means creating a solid plan for each phase of the move from starting the packing process to arranging everything in the new home. Consider making a checklist to facilitate packing.

Start with the items you won’t need before moving, like knickknacks, pictures, and seasonal clothing and bedding. Seasonal decor falls into that category as well. You could even go ahead and pack up kitchen gadgets you never use. Along the way, think about getting rid of items that never get used, so you’ll have less to pack and less clutter to deal with at the new house.

2) Transfer Utilities

Transferring utilities ahead of time is also a good idea. Keep in mind, you don’t necessarily have to have the utilities at the current house disconnected to set them up for the new home. It’s possible to schedule the process in advance.

Doing this ahead of time also allows you to find out which utility companies will be providing services at the new home and pay any required deposits. Dealing with all those details during the move can be a headache, but handling them early on helps to avoid the frustrations. Don’t forget to have internet and cable or satellite services transferred as well. Though people tend to pay close attention to electricity, water, and gas, television and internet often get overlooked.

3) Change of Address

Setting up a change of address ahead of time is also advised. That’s another task that doesn’t have to be completed immediately before the move. You can schedule the change beforehand, including the date on which the mail should start arriving at the new house. This can be done online or by filling out a form at the local post office.

4) Pack Bug-Out Bags

Bug-out bags are generally associated with emergency survival situations, but the concept can also be customized for moving. Pack a bag for each family member that includes a change of clothes, essential medications, personal hygiene products, and other must-haves. That’ll keep everyone from having to rummage through boxes on moving day.

Ensuring a Smooth Move

Moving can certainly be frustrating and chaotic no matter how hard you try to keep a handle on the situation. Getting organized and creating a plan to cover the entire process is one of the main keys to success. Covering important points like utility transfers and address changes ahead of time will help make the move go more smoothly as well.

On top of that, build a bag for each family member that contains items they’re sure to need on the first night and day in the new house. Customize it according to their unique requirements. You could even put together a few boxes of important items for that purpose to prevent having to waste time searching for essentials during those first several hours after the move.
