How did Sacheen Littlefeather die?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American actress and activist, has passed away. She was 75.

The death of Littlefeather was announced by the academy via its Twitter account. Although no cause of death was immediately reported, multiple news outlets reported Littlefeather’s battle with breast cancer.

Littlefeather was born Marie Louise Cruz, Nov. 14, 1946, in Salinas (Calif.). She changed her name in her 20s to reflect her Native American heritage.

She provided one of the most dramatic scenes in Oscar history on March 27, 1973. Brando was awarded best actor for his role as The Godfather. Littlefeather walked on the stage in moccasins and a buckskin gown to politely express his regret at not being given the award due to Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans.

Brando declined the Oscar in Brando’s place. Her speech was met with a mix of cheers and boos. She claimed that she witnessed John Wayne, an actor, being stopped from running onto the stage while she was speaking.

NPR’s Mandalit Del Barco reported this August on a conversation Littlefeather conducted to KQED 2020 in 2020 about the speech.

“People made a living off the racism of the Hollywood Indian. They’ll boo. They don’t want to interrupt their evening.”

Littlefeather claimed that she was taken offstage by a team security guards at the Oscars. She claimed that Hollywood had boycotted her for years, calling it red list.

Littlefeather was officially reprimanded by the academy for the abuse she suffered because of her Oscars appearance earlier this year. The academy was informed by David Rubin, former president of the academy, that Littlefeather suffered “unwarranted” and unjustified abuse.

Brando later admitted that he regretted the position he put Littlefeather into. He said that he was disturbed by the booing and whistles and stomping of others, even though it may have been directed at himself,” he explained to Dick Cavett, then-talkshow host. “They should have had at least the courtesy of listening to her.”
