While this year’s IPL auction had many smart, interesting and expensive buys, here’s a look at the five steal deals that grabbed headlines at the two-day event in Bengaluru.

Alex Hales: Alex Hales is in Cricket news for being in form of his life and he is brilliantly making his bat do the talking in the ongoing PSL 2022. With the kind of performances being showcased by him, the explosive opener should have earned a phenomenal amount of money at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

However, on the day of the IPL 2022 mega auction, Hales, who had a base price of INR 1.5 crore found no takers before Kolkata Knight Riders sensed an opportunity and bought him for this season by paying the same amount. With the kind of form that he is in, it won’t be surprising if the Englishman does bag the IPL Orange Cap award this time around.

Daryl Mitchell:  Daryl Mitchell is a handy middle-order batter for New Zealand who had played a match-winning knock against England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 semifinal. The man who had led the Kiwis to their maiden T20 World Cup final was expected to gain a lot at the IPL auction.

Surprisingly, Mitchell who is yet to attain fame and fortune in the IPL was roped in by the Rajasthan Royals for his original base price of INR 75 lakh.

Devon Conway: Daryll Mitchell’s countryman Devon Conway is now one of the Black Caps’ most bankable batters despite having a late start to his international career. At the same time, the southpaw can also contribute as a makeshift wicketkeeper.

Conway, who had made his T20I debut in November last year bagged a maiden IPL contract but lack of experience despite heroics in his short career meant that he was sold to the Chennai Super Kings for his base price of INR one crore even though he did deserve a bit more.

Rassie van der Dussen: Rassie van der Dussen is one of the best batters in the shortest format having amassed 933 runs from 34 matches averaging 38.87. Despite being one of the accomplished cricketers in this format, the South African failed to get a huge IPL contract.

Initially, no team was interested in buying him at the IPL 2022 mega auction before, the inaugural edition winners Rajasthan Royals showed faith in him by offering a sum of INR 1 crore which was also his base price.

David Warner: Being the fifth-highest run-getter in IPL history having amassed 5449 runs from 150 games averaging 41.59 and a strike rate of 139.96 including a record three IPL Orange Caps, David Warner was expected to be one of the most expensive players at the two-day event in Bengaluru.

Nonetheless, Delhi Capitals won the bidding war against their competitors without the need of breaking the bank by welcoming the southpaw to their squad by just offering INR 6.25 crore.
