Francis Joseph, a former striker for Brentford and Wimbledon, has died at the age of 62. He was the first player of African descent to represent Wimbledon, scoring against Darlington in 1980.

Who was Francis Joseph?

Francis Joseph was a player for many different teams during his time in Football League.

After being named Player of the Year his first season at Wimbledon, Joseph moved to Brentford in 1982. He was the club’s first black member and made over 100 appearances in five seasons.

Joseph was released by United in 1987 and spent some time at Bristol Rovers, Aldershot and Aldershot. Later, he was appointed as a Chertsey Town player-coach. He moved to Wealdstone.

Joseph played three matches in his final season at Wealdstone. Bryant did not allow Joseph to play in 2013 but he still coached his team.

Joseph was born in London’s Kilburn neighbourhood. After playing for several non-league football teams, he began his professional football career at Wimbledon in 1980. He went on to play for the United States, Finland, and Belgium.

Joseph was a member of JYP77 and Honka in Finland, as well as Racing Ghent in Belgium. He was also a Tampa Bay Rowdies player in the United States.

In 1988, he was granted a free transfer to Sheffield United. On his debut in the Football League against Darlington, he scored a league goal.

Later, he played in a league match against Reading. During the match, he also sustained a leg injury. The following season, he was again injured in a return match. He did not regain his place in United’s first team.

Later, he moved to Reading where he scored 16 goals during his debut season.

Joseph signed for Reading in 1987 after leaving Brentford. He scored against Darlington in his Football League debut.

He also played 14 games for Leyton Orient. Joseph and Tony Mahoney formed a strike partnership during his time with the Bees.

In 2005, Francis Joseph returned to Wimbledon on a temporary basis. Joseph went on to become a coach after his playing career.

He was a Chertsey Town player-coach, where he played in the non-league league. Joseph was also a coach at Wealdstone.

Francis Joseph was born in Kilburn, London. Before making his Football League debut, he played for several non-league clubs. In 1980, he was named Wimbledon’s ‘Player-of-the Year’.

He made a name for hisself with Brentford, where 55 goals were scored in 137 matches. In 1980, he was awarded Plough Lane’s Player of the Year award.
