Reuters on March 15-Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, the United States Senate passed legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent beginning in 2023, terminating the twice-annual clock changes that favour brighter afternoons and more economic activity.
What Is Daylight Saving Time?
Table of Contents
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of advancing the clocks by one hour forward from standard time during the summer and backward in the fall to make greater use of natural daylight.
Is it better to turn the clocks back or forward?
One minor saying used to remember which way to adjust your watch is “spring ahead, fall back.”
When DST begins in the spring (= losing 1 hour), you set your clock forward one hour and back one hour when DST ends in the fall (= gaining 1 hour).
What is the purpose of Daylight Savings Time?
Daylight saving time was implemented to save electricity. It was a complete failure. In the United States, daylight saving time began as an energy conservation measure during World War I and became a nationwide norm in the 1960s.
The idea is to decrease the number of daylight hours we get in the evening during the summer months.
Is daylight savings time going to become permanent?
The Sunshine Protection Act was unanimously adopted by voice vote in the Senate.
The law must still be passed by the House of Representatives, which has held a committee hearing before it can be given to President Joe Biden for signature.
The White House has not confirmed Biden’s support for it. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s spokeswoman declined to say if she supports the bill but said she was evaluating it carefully.
One of the bill’s sponsors, Senator Marco Rubio, stated that backers agreed that the change would not occur until November 2023, following input from airlines and broadcasters.
According to advocates, the shift would allow youngsters to play outside later and minimize seasonal depression.
