At his first appearance in court, the judge denied bond for the 16-year-old boy, citing new medical records. Tests showed traces of marijuana and Prozac in his blood, but no alcohol.
Kennedy’s defense attorney, Ryan Beasley, said he was on suicide watch and wasn’t getting the proper care at the detention center. Kennedy’s first court appearance is April 14.
Caleb took a hit from a vape pen before the crash
The teen was charged with felony driving under the influence of marijuana after police said he was high while intoxicated. While it is not known if the marijuana was from the vape pen, Kennedy has admitted to inhaling it before the crash.
He had been driving under the influence of marijuana for about three hours before the crash. He told police that he met a friend near a Walmart and took a hit before he crashed into Parris.
It was not clear what was in the vape pen, but the substance Kennedy was inhaling was a known narcotic.

Authorities have said Kennedy told a friend he was “fed up” and “tripping” before running over the boy. Beasley said Kennedy’s Prozac prescription had just been doubled and described him as being disoriented.
Beasley asked for a $20,000 bond and home detention with GPS monitoring. He will be held until he can be found guilty and could face up to 25 years in prison.

A former “American Idol” contestant has been charged with a DUI involving death. Kennedy is accused of hitting 54-year-old Larry Duane Parris with his pickup truck.
Parris had been standing in his driveway preparing to work on a boat in the building when Kennedy struck him. Kennedy told law enforcement he took a hit from a vape device.
He has been ordered to surrender to the Spartanburg County Detention Center pending the results of a blood test.
