Richard Gere, a humanitarian and actor, was born in Philadelphia on August 31, 1949, the second of five children of Doris Ann (Tiffany), a homemaker, and Homer George Gere, a Mayflower descendant and insurance salesman.
Richard began playing music at a young age and composed music for high school plays while still in high school.
After graduating from North Syracuse Central High School in 1967, he attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship and majored in philosophy.
After two years, he dropped out of college to pursue acting, and in 1973, he landed the lead in the London production of the rock musical “Grease.” He would appear in more plays the following year, such as “Taming of the Shrew.”
